Why is the West offshoring its migrants?

(April 24, 2024) The UK’s famously controversial Rwanda Asylum Plan has now been passed in the House of Commons, and flights are set to take off in July. In this podcast episode, we will take a deep dive into offshore migration policies, and discuss why they have become popular with Western governments.
In April 2022, the UK’s Tory government proposed The Rwanda Asylum Plan, a five-year deal that will deport illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing. Now countries like Denmark, Germany, and Italy are testing out the same idea… but offshoring migrants isn’t new. Ever since the turn of the millennium, wealthy countries like Israel and Australia have tried to deport illegal immigrants to poorer countries, leaving the same paper trail of human rights abuses and lawsuits in their wake. And yet, this is a trend that is taking EU policymakers by storm. When it comes to handling migration, is offshoring the hot new kid in the (EU) bloc? Perhaps more importantly: Is it here to stay?
Join Carly Brister, Chiara Fürst, and Flora Tucker in Out of Sight, Out of Rights as we delve deep into the issue, and try to answer the question: Why is the West offshoring its refugees and asylum seekers?
